The sweet-smelling timbers of the small dwelling grew lighter and darker as clouds drifted lazily across the winter sky. Though most of the earth lay frozen and barren amidst the freeze, a few birds and other small animals could be seen from time to time overhead or scouring the forest floor. Jewel brought a steaming cup of tea to her lips. Purple eyes soon caught the baby griffin (Amir, she called him now) sitting atop the small windowsil, looking out into the white world.
She stared at him, setting the mug down on the sturdy wooden table. How had he gotten up there? Puzzled, she pushed out her chair and stood up, then took a few steps away from the window. "Amir," She called softly, more of a question than a statement.
The griffin cocked his head toward her, then shifted his position on the sill. Feet close together, he wiggled, extending his ever-growing wings. With a hesitant start, he leapt forward, flapping his wings enough to allow him a short glide and a soft landing on the ground. From there, he folded his wings and trotted to her hooves, where he stood looking at her. He squwaked.
"When did you learn to do that..?" The golden pegasus pondered with an amused laugh. Her purple eyes met the small sapphire ones, and Amir swished his tail. He looked out the window and cooed. "It IS a nice day, isn't it?" She mused, following his gaze. "Want to see how you do in the air?" A small pang of worry seized her chest for a moment, but she knew that whatever happened, she would be able to catch him. "I'll at least take you up there," She smiled, and Amir paced slightly, understanding at least that they would soon be going somewhere.
Jewel leaned down to allow the griffin access to her neck, and soon he was situated between her wings, as usual. Closing the door behind her, she trotted down the wooded path. As soon as the trees cleared and an open area was ahead, she broke into a gallop, then leapt for the sky...
