Kail could do nothing but stare in disbelief at the singin and dancin Razzaroo - how did he manage to be so d**n giddy all the time? Couldn't he feel that emptiness too? He had been a Champion - but perhaps then it was only Kail, only Kail who now felt empty and cold and lonely. And that made her even more lonely.
She stumbled to the table and sat down rather hard, not sure what she should do now. She put her head in her hoofs and started to wonder where she was going to go now that the castle had been demolished. Perhaps SunnyD had another home somewhere besides the castle? Or maybe she could stay with Magnum if his place wasn't ruined - although she didn't want to be around Mags and Vel more than she had to. One thing was for sure in her mind - she was going to hide as long as she possibly could, stay away from the ponies who needed healing - she doubted she could do it anyways.

Razz turned around, singing into his wooden cooking spork.
"Are you sinking fast? "Had some nasty shocks? "Feeling like all hope is gone and washed up on the rocks?
He knelt by Kail, trying to make her laugh.
"Washed up on the rocks!
"Shooby-doo! Shoop-shoop..." he trailed off, suddenly becoming quite serious and gentle. "I feel it, too. On and off when the memory hits me. Singing helps. Makes it fade."
Then he launched back into song.
"Simply signal SOS!"
And returned to his cabbage. He reverted to simply humming the tune as he placed a plate in front of Kail. He sprinkled the cabbage with some finely chopped pecans.
"I hope you like fried cabbage," he said. Then he paused, as if he'd said that before... not too long ago. His memory was still fuzzy, coming in and out of his mind so that one minute he remembered things and the next they left him again. He kept having visions of silver eagles with violet beaks and claws. It seemed he was as empty as Kail looked... yet... then it faded. Still, looking at Kail, he saw something beneath her tired face.
"My, you're quite beautiful, aren't you?" he said quite innocently. "No wonder you were chosen." Then he turned to his breakfast and began to eat. "You're welcome to stay as long as you like." He said between a mouthful.

(woah - post changed between my first and second reading! lol)
Kail couldn't help but smile at the goofy pony singing, and was glad to hear she wasn't the only one who felt empty and lonely without the stripe. She would have joined him in the singing, she was a very good singer when she tried, but she had no idea what song he was singing in the first place. Kail only knew the Dolphin's Song, some old hymns to the Rainbow, and some of the old barsongs from Course that her father taught her when her mother wasn't around - she had never heard this Shoobydoo song.
"I've um, never had fried cabbage," Kail picked at it for a moment before taking a small bite. Not her favorite food, but not bad either, and her stomach certainly appreciated it.
Kail almost blushed as Razz complimented her, but it wasn't the attention-seeking type of flattery that someone like Coon would give so she smiled with a polite thank you.
She contemplated staying as she ate in silence, although worries for Vel and Coon and others kept rushing through her head. Before she knew it she had finished and pushed the plate aside, looking at Razzaroo for a moment. "Your from Ponyville right Razzaroo? Do you know how far away the Southern Coast is from here?"

(Um... I dunno, how far is it?)
"Umm..." Razz thought about it. "Couple of days by hoof?"
(Or insert right answer there, lol).
"About half that time by sky-balloon," he added, though he'd ever made the trip himself. "I mean, I figure since you've got wings. It might be quicker for you."

Kail frowned, she had had the feeling that Ponyville was a bit north as well as west of Dream Valley. (hehe, I almost wrote Grand Valley >.< School is getting to me ) "Half that time by wing," she repeated softly to herself, then looked up with a confused expression. "I'm sorry, but what's a sky ballon?"

Razz quit munching for a minute.
"A sky balloon is a great big balloon that carries you wherever you want to go. We usually have them all over Ponyville, but I guess a lot of them have been grounded." The memory of a grounded balloon seemed to tug at his mind. "I guess if I had wings, I wouldn't need a balloon to travel. Unless I was too tired to make the trip. Did you have a good rest?"

Kail shrugged, "I guess I had a good rest. I still feel exhausted though, like I've had every drop of life drained from my body and its still working on seeping back in. Had wierd dreams about all the times I've had to deal with the Rainbow and Piston." Kail rubbed at her head, trying to make the headache go away, "I have a long history with them, and its none of it pleasant."
Kail had a strong urge to go to the ocean and visit her grandmother's pod, but she knew she didn't have the strength to fly there, and she didn't really want to leave the small shop/house anyways.
"Where did you sleep last night? Or have you been awake all night long?"

"You've fought the rainbow before?" Razz seemed impressed. "I've been up since... since... well, since I've been up. I don't really remember. I think I just got up before you went to bed. But that sounds silly, doesn't it? I'm still kind of tired and yet I'm not tired at all. Maybe I always feel this way. I don't really know. But I remember the rainbow. Yes, I was the violet stripe. Or I think I was. It's gone now, isn't it?"
He seemed sad.

Tears welled into Kails eyes, though she refused to let them spill over. "Yes, its gone now." She looked down at the table and studied the patterns of the wood with her eyes.
She had known when the Rainbow came to her that she would have to give it up at some point, but the surprise of how quickly it left, and with no warning, left her in a state of shock that couldn't be shaken. It was much like loosing a loved one without being able to see them one last time and say goodbye.
"Huh, some great Champions we make," she smiled bitterly and layed her head on her hoofs on top of the table, looking outside at the glarringly bright day.

Razz looked glum and close to tears himself as he stared at his cabbge. Two big drops fell in and he pushed the plate away.
"I remember her now," he said softly.

Th two birds flew and landed softly on the table, ending their song. The raven walked closer to Kail, while the phoenix went over to Razz.

Kail turned her eyes toward Razz without lifting her head. Appearantly he had lost something more than just the violet stripe of the Rainbow. Kail absentmindedly started to pet the raven from tip of head to tail, and wished she could heal wounds of the heart and soul as well as those of the body and mind.
Feeling slightly lucky that she at least didn't loose anyone close to her, Kail reached over and quickly gave Razz's hoof a squeeze - she didn't know anything else she could do. On a whim she started to hum, an old song the dolphins used to sing to her when she was sad and lonely. It may not help much, but like he had said, singing takes your mind off it.

Razz eyed the phoenix rather strangely, but he didn't back away from the bird. Kail's soft humming lifted his spirit and he was back on the beach where the mighty waves crashed. The dark stallion was dancing along the shore under the mysterious storm he had been chasing. How long ago had that been? And what had happened since then? In his emptiness, Razz felt the urge to be looking for something. The presence of the phoenix seemed to ground and settle his mind. Awareness rose from the dark like newborn fire as what was left of him began to heal.

Kail continued to hum, occassionally breaking into the quiet words of the songs she knew. She closed her eyes also, but couldn't find a time when she was giddy and simply playing with friends. Always Kailani had been more mature than her peers, always the rational one, always looking out for everyone else lest they be hurt.
Picnics were always interupted, family time always harassed by one thing after another. A tear ran slowly down her face as her song changed. She shouldn't let the doubt and empty feelings of the moment get to her, so she tried to hold it in and sing with a voice as empty as she felt.

With the healing of Razz's mind came greater misery as he began to understand the events that had led him to this moment. Memories crashed over him, tasting of salt. He didn't even realize he was crying. He sniffled and placed his head on the table. Why did all he love always leave him? Why did it fade?
