Not knowing what to say Roux dipped his head. All he wanted was to make things right. He wasn't sure how to go about it though.
"I looked for you." Roux began his voice soft; "No one knew where you were. I thought I'd lost you."
The stallion blushed slightly at what he had just said. Thankfully though his light brown coat hid it well.
He was unsure as to how she would react. He hadn't meant for anything like that to come out. It was true he cared for her. Just how much though, was something he couldn't answer right than.

"Not many know who I am," The pegasus smiled briefly, then cleared her throat.
"I don't remember very much of it," Jewel admitted, "but I do rememeber you didn't come back." She didn't know what to think, or how to explain it. He had broken his promise, but here he was.. finding her. The wingtips of the unsure pegasus twitched slightly, as she tried to detect what might have been another lie in the stallion's voice. She found none.
The silence of the forest filled the space between them, in a comforting, yet unbearable way. Jewel looked down, then back up at him. In a calm and friendly tone, she said simply, "I'm glad you're all right."

"I'm sorry." Roux felt terrible, "I meant to. I honestly did, Jewel. I had every intention of coming back for you."
The stallion lowered his head. How could he explain the orange evil's death and the pain/sorrow it had caused Rose. The look she had given him had been too much. In a daze he had wandered home. Only to recall before reaching the river the promise he had made. His mad dash back into town to look for her. Not being able to. The slow trek home late that morning. How did he explain it to her? He couldn't begin to find the words.

Jewel noticed that Roux was quite obviously troubled. His eyes spoke of an experience that couldn't be put into words. She knew those eyes.. eyes she had seen in the baby griffin, and more importantly... in her own reflection. Upon this realization, the pegasus stopped her nervous movements, and felt a little more at ease. The tiny, bearly detectable hum of the magic of the amulet even to the mare's ears and senses, calmed. Jewel noticed, not for the first time, that this mysterious thing around her neck sometimes acted to show her moods. She absently wondered what else it did, as there always seemed to be something new to learn about it.
She had been told to trust her heart, and trust her intuition. She felt less and less mistrust and hurt from the one standing before her. Hearing not only his words, but the emotion connected to them, moved to sway her. With a small smile, she simply responded with assurance, "I believe you." Jewel took a small step forward, but stopped again.

Roux dared to lift his head up and look at Jewel. She was far more understanding than most. He hadn't expected her to respond the way she had; yet after she had he couldn't imagine her doing it any other way. Something like a smile tugged at the corners of his mouth.
Roux found he was finally able to say, "I'm glad you're all right too."
Up until that point he had been terrified of learning that something had happened to her. While not knowing had driven him to the brink of insanity. He had found it somehow more comforting not to know; for fear that it would be bad. After all no news was good news, wasn't it? At least it seemed to prove true this time.
Roux reached out his muzzle as though to brush it against Jewel's, but didn't. He wasn't sure that he had any right to touch her. Any right to even care for her.

A small flock of birds taking flight from an overhead tree caught the golden pegasus's attention for a brief moment, causing her to lose eye contact with the stallion before her. In a way, she welcomed the distraction. Purple eyes looked upward at the small birds swooping off the limbs and away to a new destination beyond the stream. With tiny chirps and trills, the birds glided along on wings much like the pegasus's own.
Suddenly, Jewel shivered. Whether it was spontaenity or from the cold, she couldn't tell. The sun was getting lower in the sky, and consequently, it WAS getting a little more chilly. She looked at Roux.

Brown eyes noticed the lowering sun. Instantly he straightened himself.
"I should get going." Roux spoke softly; "It's getting late."
He didn't want to detain Jewel from anything she might have wanted or needed to do. The stallion knew he had already taken up too much of her time. Dipping his head, he turned to leave.
"See you later." He hoped so anyway.
Roux studied the lightly snow covered ground. At least he could follow his tracks until it got dark. By than he figured he'd be close enough to feel the river.

"Yeah.. me too," Jewel agreed. She looked at Roux, who seemed more meloncholy than she had previously known him to be. What had changed since that night? What was different?
She didn't know, but she felt a little compassion for the stallion. The least she could do was provide him company.
"If you'd like some company," She walked up to him, "My house is on the way to your part of the River." She said gently, and smiled briefly, hoping he would possibly smile a little himself. Life was too short to spend in frowns and tears.

His facial features softened as a smile appeared on his face.
"I'd like that very much." Roux replied.
The light dusting of snow would make finding his way back easier. The thought of watching where he stepped across his mind, but for a brief second. There was no reason to. He knew that. Never having bothered to before, Roux pushed the thought from his mind. This was silly. He was being silly. The orange evil couldn't reach up through the cold ground and grab him. Why the thought had crossed his mind, he didn't know. Perhaps because the look on Rose's face was still so fresh upon his mind.
Turning his thoughts from that horrific scene, Roux ventured to ask, "Where did you go?"

"This way," Jewel motioned with her head, and began to walk with Roux along the river.
"Me? Well.." She sighed, making a face as if she were trying to remember, "Willow and I stayed by the castle ruins for a little... it was all blurry though.. I really can't remember," the pegasus looked a little embarressed," Eventually two other ponies came, and next thing I knew.. I was waking up in Willow's house on the prairie. She had given me some medicine, so I recovered--well.. got better--quickly."
Intricate crystals of snow fell softly from the sky above, some clinging to the purple and brown locks of the gold-colored pegasus. A few lingered on her eyelashes, but the ones which brushed her cheeks soon melted into tiny tears, before drying up into nothing at all. She looked to Roux, wondering if there was anything more he wanted to know.

Roux followed along side Jewel. Hooves not making a sound as they stepped upon the snow.
Though he was ever so grateful she was better, he couldn't help but wonder why she hadn't waited. 'She wasn't feeling well’; the stallion told himself again. He knew that. He knew something was wrong when he left her. Willow made her better. For that he should be thankfully she was with someone who knew what to do, instead of disappointed that she had left without him.
"I'm glad your better." Roux replied, "That's really great that Willow knew just what to do."
The scent of the river was growing stronger. Even if, rainbow forbid, he somehow lost his sight he'd be able to find the river. There was a pull between he and it. Lately it had been getting stronger. The river ached for him to return and Roux was but a servant to it's calling.
A sideways glance at Jewel though, and he forgot it all. He would give up everything for her, if she but asked him to.

"She's very gifted in the ways of medicine.. even with tricky ailments, like concussions," Jewel responded, thankful for both Willow's friendship and expertise at that moment. Rainbow knows she wouldn't have been very well off without her.
In the distance, Jewel's small home was growing as the pair neared her destination. The snow was falling a little heavier, and the sun was further down by the horizon. The oncoming darkness was causing some slippery patches to appear on the path, which the pegasus tried her best to avoid, only slipping once or twice as they walked.

"That's indeed quite the gift." Roux agreed.
The wind was beginning to pick up, along with the falling snow. The stallion moved a little closer to Jewel, in hopes that he would help to block some of the chilly north wind from freezing her.
Ears went flat against his head, to keep both snow and wind out. It also doubled in keeping his ears warm.
"Are we almost there?" Roux asked.
He knew how far he was from the river. But he had no idea how close they were to Jewel's home.

"It's just ahead.. a little hard to see, because it blends in with the woods.." Jewel fought to keep her teeth from chattering in the cold. Being a pegasus, she had somewhat hollow bones, and became cold easily at times.
Before they knew it, the ponies had arrived at Jewel's small but comfortable cabin-like home. As she turned to speak to Roux, a strong gust of wind pulled at her scarf, causing it to whip around in the air. Struggling for only a second, she opened the door so both of them could get out of the cold and speak to eachother.
"Whew.." Jewel shuddered involuntarily and shook her mane, glad to be in a warmer place. "It's getting pretty dark.. are you sure you'll be able to find your way home safely?"

Roux looked hard, trying to make out the house. Squinting slightly, he noted didn't help in his quest to find the house. Opening his eyes wider, he was rewarded with a gust of wind blowing snow into his eyes. The snow felt like a hundred little pinpricks. Blinking rapidly several times, he waited for his vision to clear.
"It won't be a problem." Roux replied with a wink.
Turning serious he asked, "Is there anything I can do for you or get you before I go? More firewood?"
