(can't sleeep..)
Jewel took off her scarf and lay it on the chair next to a small table. She was relieved to feel the blood pumping in her veins again.
"As long as you're sure you'll get there safely.." She started, looking out the window at the gusty wind.
"I think I've got enough," Jewel said, glancing at the iron wood-holder next to the fireplace, "But thank you. That's very kind of you."
Just then, a muffled chirping sound came from an indistinct area of the small house. Jewel inwardly cringed, still undecided as to what to do with her little housemate. Telling others was something she wasn't about to do just yet.

"Not a problem m'lady." Roux assured her.
He was used to darker nights. There had been many starless nights spent on the water, and more still on land.
"Your welcome. Always happy to lend a helping hoof."
Ears perked up at the unfamiliar sound. Instead of asking, Roux brushed it off as something from outside. He was better aquatinted with the sounds of the river than those on land.
[I'm sorry you can't. =( ]

Jewel dismissed the sound with a small cough, and acted natural, as if she hadn't heard it. Not sure what else to say, the pegasus smiled slightly, "I hope you find your way safely."

Roux nodded, "I'm sure I'll be fine."
Turning to leave, he offered her one more genuine smile before going.
His voice was soft as he said, "Sweet dreams."
Roux hoped tonight there would be no dreams to wake him. He wanted to forget. To forget it all.

As Jewel watched the brown stallion turn to disappear into the harsh winter which had forced itself upon Ponyville, she nodded her head in acknoledgement of his words. She could have asked him to stay, and given the circumstances, she probably should have. But at the same time, he was still somewhat mysterious to her, and she wasn't sure how to react to him. His soft words, the tone of his voice, and the way their eyes met pushed her heart one way, while her mind went another. Until he gave her reason to trust him, she could only reciprocate the kindness he showed:
"Goodnight, Roux." She said as he took his leave. perhaps we will meet again soon...

"Goodnight, Jewel." Roux replied.
The wind nipped at his ears and nose, and caused his eyes to water. Lowering his head ever so slightly he pushed onward. He knew the way from here. The smell of the river filled his nostrils and coursed through every fiber of his being.
One determined step after another, he pressed on. Hoof in front of hoof until the river came into view. The sight caused his heart to soar.
[Shall we go back to the present now?]

As the brown stallion approached, Jewel was thrown from her memories. Since the griffin baby was in the small cleared space, she knew it wouldn't be easily seen... but she had no time to hide him now. And for some reason, it didn't bother her. Roux wasn't the kind of pony she'd worry about giving such knowledge to. Still, she stepped in front of it almost upon protective instinct. It would make itself known soon enough anyway.
"How are you?" Jewel asked as Roux drew near.

"I'm fine." Roux answered, "What about you? How have you been?"
The stallion was slow to approach her. Not wishing to intrude upon whatever she was doing.
Stopping a few feet back, he noticed another small stick and picked it up. Placing it under his arm, he tucked it carefully in with the others he had already collected.

"I'm doing well," She said, with more livliness than when they had previously met. Since she had had a short time to recover from the whole incident, her eyes were beginning to get a soft twinkle to them again. It wouldn't be terribly long before she felt completely herself once more.
" Despite the snow and the cold, it really is a nice da--"
She was cut short by a trilling sound coming from her feet. The silver-gray baby popped its head between her front hooves, and looked up at Roux curiously. The pegasus laughed good-naturedly, and pulled her chin to her chest to try and look at the baby.
"And it seems I've acquired a new little friend as of late.." She explained, with a slight blush.

"I'm glad to hear that." Roux replied with a smile.
Roux had to agree it was a nice day, but than he always did enjoy the cold. While it made traveling impossible, it was always a chance to learn something new from those that lived where he stopped for the winter.
Brown eyes looked down at the griffin. A smile crinkled the corners of his eyes.
"So I see. And does your new friend have a name?"

The gray baby looked wary of Roux, and stayed behind Jewel's hooves. After a second, he sent a shrill chirp Roux's way, and stared at him with big amber eyes.
"I don't know yet.. I only found him the other day. I don't know what to do with him, either... I just knew I couldn't leave him to die with his mother.." She explained some more details of the encounter.
"I guess that's what I get though, for making rash decisions.." She blushed, smiling a little at Roux.

Roux half chuckled as he said, "I don't think your little friend is too fond of me."
Ears twitched forward as he listened to Jewel. Shifting the bundle of sticks from one arm to the other, he relaxed slightly.
"Such a shame." Roux commented, "He's a lucky fellow though to have found you."
The stallion smiled, "I don't think it rash at all."
It was his turn to blush as he added in, "The world can use more like you, Jewel. Your kind is few and fewer still ever know such kindness."

Jewel frowned in a mused manner at the fluff of feathers by her feet, not believing that the baby would dislike Roux. She laughed softly, "I'm sure he'll like you once he gets to know you."
The golden pegasus looked down and almost bit her tongue in an effort not to blush. Sure enough, as was her nature when complimented so, her cheeks turned a rosy hue. She opened her mouth to say something, but nothing came out. A funny feeling had come over her upon hearing him speak to her so; such a feeling that she debated trying to ignore. Something was coming back to life that had remained dormant for a long time, and fascinating and exciting as it was, she couldn't help but fear it.
Clearing her throat, she changed the topic, "So what are you up to?" She asked, meeting his eyes again, then motioning to the sticks he was carrying.

"Perhaps." Roux replied, "Than again maybe he needs a little persuasion."
The stallion had a couple of things in mind. One stood out more though and he was almost certain the little guy would like that better than just about anything. As soon as he whipped up a treat for Jewel to bring her, he'd take along something else for the griffin.
Brown eyes sparkled, "Collecting wood. I'll need a good supply of it for this winter if I want to any cooking."
He wasn't worried about the cold. That didn't bother him. Being stuck with eating nothing but dried berries and nuts though ... that didn't exactly thrill him too much.

"Ah," She nodded, "I think I have most of the wood I need, already. I gathered some here and there since early fall. It gets pretty chilly, even in the shelter of the forest."
Noticing a large snowflake falling from of the corner of her eye, Jewel tipped her head upward and caught it on her tongue. She smiled and laughed softly, blushing a little in light of her silliness.
"I should probably be getting home soon," She said casually, "I don't want him to freeze," Jewel looked down at the griffin baby before picking up by the scruff and putting him on her back. She winced slightly as his little claws gripped the bottom of her neck above her shoulders. The golden pegasus shifted slightly, hoping to find a more comfortable position. "I can't wait until he can fly on his own," She laughed.
