Much like an alert dog, the brown stallion lay on the deck of his boat. Front legs stretched out in front of him and back legs tucked beneath him. With his head held upright, he could see over the rail. Brown eyes glanced this way and that as Roux surveyed the river.
It had been his home now the past several months. While it had been peaceful at times the sleepy little town had proven that it was anything but just another 'sleepy' town that ponies could pass through and quickly forget. Many a pony had he met while staying and even more had he seen when the ROD had come to destroy them. How quickly the towns’ ponies had banded together. There was an unmistakable strength that they shared, even if they were unaware of it. Staying here might not be so bad. But was he truly ready to give up his gypsy ways and settle in one spot, permanently?
Again the stallion surveyed the river. All was quiet. As it should be on this most joyous of holidays.

(cont. from Outer Edges)
Caught up in the thrill of a beautiful day, the gold pegasus pushed higher and higher into the clouds, until she might be mistaken for a bird. Barely kissing the clouds, Jewel soared and turned in the air, soaking up what she could of the sun. Her mane and tail flew behind her like brown and purple ribbons caught in a breeze. She laughed, caught in the joy of it all. Spiraling her way high in the air, she paused, then, tucking her wings, free fell a considerable distance. Then, suddenly, she spread her wings and caught an upward gust back up into the air.
Now, sailing along peacefully, she felt the baby's grip loosen. Looking back as best she could, she saw him holding on with his front talons, and letting his little wings catch the air. Again, she worried, but also reasoned she wouldn't let anything terrible happen to him. All of a sudden, he let go.
Whipping around, Jewel flew close to and around him, much like a mother teaching a foal to swim. She nudged him up a little, and encouraged him to fly. It came easier for him, because he was so light. Realizing they were indeed steadily losing altitude, Jewel swept under him, and he firmly held on again. Descending in a spiral, she slowed almost to a stop before the ground, gently touching her back hooves, then front, to the earth. She reared slightly and stretched her wings while tossing her mane, fully satisfied with such a flight.
Now glancing about her surroundings, Jewel realized she was near Roux's boat, on the river. Flipping her mane into place, she nonchalantly began to walk in his direction.

Slowly he stood, like a majestic lion that knows when they own the ground upon which they stand. Head held high he gazed out across the frozen river. Taking in a deep breath of cool air it filled his lungs and he inwardly smiled. While this town could never replace his river, it did have other pleasant things to offer. Some of which he was beginning to like more and more the longer he stayed there.

One ear flicked around as a cardinal chirped a merry morning to its mate. A bittersweet song, the stallion flicked his ear back around, muscles tightening beneath his coat. Shoulders bulged, as he stood motionless.
Tossing his head to one side, he decided there was no reason he had to stay and listen to the song. With an effortless leap from the deck of his boat he landed without a sound on the blanket of snow below.

Jewel pricked her ears forward as she saw Roux leap from his boat and onto the shore. She smiled as she continued walking toward him, kicking up small clouds of snow with her feet.
"Good morning, Roux," She smiled broadly, "It's a beautiful day, isn't it?" She couldn't seem to keep the excitement from her voice.

(gotta move on!)
Noticing Roux's lack of attention and even greater lack of words, Jewel bid him good day and headed toward the town for the Festival celebration.

Half-waking from his daydream, Roux noticed the retreating figure. Upon closer examination he realized just whose silhouette it was that danced across the snow, Jewel's. The thought to rush after her to apologize for his lack of attention was strong, but the pull of the river proved stronger yet.
Obeying the river as he always had, he remained where he was. Listening to the quiet lullaby the river sang, even under the glistening ice.
(OOC: And now a jump in seasons.)
Months slipped away and winter melted into spring. The river thawed as ice vanished. Water flowing freely once again. Spring came and went with nothing of great interest happening. Yet the stallion had remained. Even though the river called to him. Each day the call grew louder and each day he found it harder to ignore. Stay he had said he would, at least for a while. But stay he had for perhaps too long a while.
For almost a year, this peaceful town had been his home. A feat only one other place could lay claim to.
Go he knew he would. When he did not know. But stay, forever? How could he? How could he deny the river? His very background? Was it even possible to give up one's gypsy ways? Even if it was, could he?
Shaking the thoughts from his head, Roux stole one last glance back at the river. His river. Lapping water licked at his boat and washed the already spotless stones clean.
Tearing his gaze from the water, he forced one hoof in front of another and headed into town.
