Kail opened her eyes and shivered - someone must have either turned the heat down in the night, or opened a window. She pulled the covers up a little closer and huddled into a ball for warmth, then decided it was futile and got out of bed, throwing on some slippers and a shawl.
The sea green pegasus walked as quietly as she could down the stairs and to the kitchen, putting a teapot on the stove and getting a mug ready with hot chocolate - she was never a big fan of tea. She grabbed the teapot off the stove before it had the chance to whistle so she wouldn't wake anyone, and poured the cup half full of the hot water, the rest she filled with milk - perfect.
Kail yawned and stretched her wings before sitting at the table next to the window. Outside a bright morning was just beginning and frost was glittering in the early morning light. The window even had frost creeping up the sides, making it blurry and hard to see out of. Kail tugged the shawl a little tighter and pulled her sky blue mane out from under it and took a sip of the perfect temperature hot chocolate.

Swirl crept quietly in from outside, then smiled and waved the large bag of kitched items at Kail when she spotted her. She was in the habit of greeting the sun, so she had already been up and about before sunrise collecting donations of utensils left hanging on doorknobs for the remaining displaced ponies.
She then took off her hat, scarf, earmuffs, coat, sweater, 2 layers of socks, and boots. Obviously she was not used to the cold.
"Mmmm...cocoa. Almost as good as tea! How are you doing?"

Kail smiled, she knew the Coursian weather and was sure Swirl was just freezing in the snow. All the layers upon layers proved it. She stood up and walked over to the other with the mug still in hoof, riffling through the bag to see what they had gotten.
"Im tired," Kail said with a soft laugh, "I dont think I will ever be used to early mornings." She took another sip of cocoa to warm her body and hugged her shawl tight. "Looks like you did well already this morning - would you like some tea to warm you up? There is still plenty of hot water."

"Yes'm. Hot tea is the best idea of all time."
Swirl walked to the kitchen and spent awhile just lingering near the warm stove. Eventually she came back out with a big mug and a big smile.
"Things are really going well. I think if it gets much colder I might have to go back to the Sisters, just so my nose doesn't freeze off. It's not like any of you have really needed our help for a while now, except for shipping in the odd supply now and again, I just stuck around because I like the friends I've made. Which, strangely enough, reminds me. Don't you have a birthday during one of these cold months?"

Kail laughed, "Well, I can say very much that I have enjoyed your company, but I will always be able to visit Course once you are called back. And surely we will need help until the Castle is rebuilt - so I wouldn't go leaving just yet."
Taking another sip of the cocoa, Kail thought about her birthday - it seemed she always forgot it anyways, what with all the holiday things going on. "Yes, it will be my birthday soon, on the Festival of Lights. I have always had to share the celebration with the great Pone and the Guardian Stars."
Walking over to the window she looked out, but it was too light to see the Guardian Stars now. Still, her mother had told her the story - her mother had been there, watching them die and fly up to the sky to guard Ponyland forever. "The Guardian, Wind Whistler, the Queen Serena, and the other," Kail could never remember the third guardian star for some reason, and she had always followed her mother out to the field between Dream Castle and the forest on the darkest night of the year, to pray for the souls of the Guardian Stars, and especially Wind Whistler. Her mother had never met Wind Whistler, but felt a closeness all the same, which she had passed on to her daughter.
Coming back from the window Kail caught her own reflection in it and frowned. "Turning 19 and I still only look 15 - I dont see how anyone is going to take me seriously with a face like this."

"They'll take you seriously because you've earned it. And if they don't tell them you've got connections," Swirl paused to wink and take a big hot sip of tea.
"I suppose you have a point, it is good PR for the Sisters if I stay until the castle is finished. And it would be nice to be here for your birthday and the Lights. You know, we are all stars in our way - stars and solar systems and entire cosmos. You're just naturally closer to the truth then some others. At least, I think so," Swirl looked thoughtful as she mulled over scraps of The Sisters teachings and her own experiences since arriving at Ponyville.

Kail smiled, she sure had earned it; if Ponyland only knew how many times she had quickly and quietly saved its butt - they would be celebrating her at the Festival of Light instead of the great Pone. Her extra symbol also would help, proclaiming her one of the Seven Champions, and surely no one in Ponyville would ever forget.
"Yes, you must stay for the Festival! I may even envite my family to come here rather than go back home, but if I do would you like to come to Dream Valley with me? They have the biggest and brightest Festival you could ever hope to see!" Kail smiled, remembering the Festival - always they held tradition before her birthday, always they prayed to the Rainbow and gave thanks for the stars before singing their happy birthdays. Kail prefered it that way, afterall, who was she compared to the Rainbow, she was just a tiny bit of it.
"Maybe someday, we will both go to the stars Swirl, and we will be forever remembered by those left behind us."

"Now THAT would be a grand adventure."
Swirl eyed the shortening shadows outside the window as the sun rose ever higher.
"So, what's the plan for today? Anything new pop up?"

"Today?" Kail thought a moment, "I was going to go shopping for gifts. My family and Vel and... Razz... and you of course. Although I have no clue what to get everyone."
Kail finished her cocoa and took her cup to the sink, washing it out quickly and putting it away. "What about you?" she said over her shoulder, "what do you have planned?"

(meet my newest charrie!)
Suddenly from the top of the stairs came a little "meep" and a few loud bangs and crashes before an orange sherbet colored pony rolled head over heals across the floor between Kail and Swirl.
When she finally stopped, Sherbet sat right-side up and shook hear head, grinning from ear to ear. "That was fun!"
Kail merely laughed at the young filly - when she had first arrived with her family to stay at the nursery until their new home was built Sherbet had given Kail quite a few frights, and the peg had constantly dotted on the younger one to make sure she wasn't hurt. Now though, the sea green peg had learned that this child was almost as hurt-proof as herself, although by imagination only.

Strawberry Swirl giggled at the kid-o, then eyed the path she'd rolled down.
"You know, it works better if you sit on a plastic tray," she said with a wink. "You weren't listening in on gift-giving talk, were you?"

Sherbet's ears perked up, "gifts? Am I getting gifts? Where are they?" She jumped up and started to run around the room, looking for her gifts.
Kail grabbed her as she ran by, "hold on there Explosion - we haven't bought the gifts yet, and you cannot have them until the Festival of Lights."
Sherbet's ears fell as well as her face.
"Would you like to go shopping with us?" Kail said, and the little one's face lit up once again.
"Yeah!" she said and hopped over to the door, ready to go.

Freon opened the door to the nursery and knocked Sherbet over, who was just on the other side, facing Kail. Sherbet skidded across the room as Freon's eyes widened.
"Rainbows! Are you ok?" he asked with concern and looked at Kail and Swirl, hoping neither of them thought too badly of him.
Sherbet's ears perked up as she skidded to a stop on the floor, "that was fun!" She hopped back over to Freon, "can we do it again?"
Freon just blinked, and Kail trotted over and scooped the youngster up in her wings, "how about we go shopping first, and get into trouble later." Kail smiled at Freon, "dont worry about her, she's a hoofful, but hardly gets seriously injured." She then noticed Oreo, "hello, Im Kailani, you must be a friend of Freons."

Oreo smiled, suddenly feeling very shy.
"I'm Oreo." She feared trying to form a more complex setance at the risk of looking like a total idiot.
What was that saying? Better to keep your mouth shut and look stupid than open it and remove all doubt.....

(ooc: eep, ate my post)
"Hello there! Can I get any of you anything?"
Swirl wiggled her nose at the kitchen and cookie jars, then eyed the spot where Sherbet had done her acrobatics. Swirl had a big time weak spot for fun things. She started to put some heavy socks on in preparation for returning to the unbearably cold outdoors, but gave into temptation and gave the floor a good sliding over.
"Whheeeeehehehe!"
After all, you only live once.
